Living in Berlin x interview 019: a cozy cafe in Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany

Anna is a German and she has moved to Berlin for almost 10 years. Now she works in a company, she also has her own catering business, Blackbird, and a bistro, Melro, which provides Portuguese snacks.

Why did you move to Berlin?

After finishing my Vocational education
(Ausbildung)to become a cook, I worked in Hamburg. Later I got a chance to work in Berlin, and since I was a child, everybody was talking about Berlin and all my friends wanted to live there. So I thought, it is time to take a look of this city.

Do you like Berlin?

I like it and I hate it. The first few years I felt that I couldn’t live in other cities anymore, because this is such a convenient and interesting place. You will never be alone. No matter how late it is, there is always someone stroll on the street. You don’t need to be afraid. It’s almost ten years, sometimes I think, it’s time to live somewhere else, such as a city that the weather is warm and near the see. But since I have just opened this cafe in July, I think, I will still stay here for a while.

Do you have any tips for Berlin?

There is a market not far from here, called “Maybachufer”. The combination of lots of cultures let this market become really interesting. The most vendors speak turkish, so sometimes you will feel like you are also a little bit turkish.

Why did you decide to have a cafe?

It was a dream since I was a child. I want to have my own restaurant, bar, or something relatives to food.

I like this cafe! When the first time I came in, I looked around and then chose the seat in the corner next to the piano. The moment that I sat down I thought, ah, nice, this is the cafe I’m looking for, with comfortable and relax atmosphere. What’s the concept of this cafe?

There are many cafes with dark atmosphere, but that is not what I want. I want to create a fresh, clear and open space. I love see and warm weather, so I added some elements of ocean as well.

I love Portuguese food. When I was lived in Hamburg, there was a restaurant, which provides Portuguese food. I visited there very often and I love it! I also visited Lisbon many times for inspirations when I was planning this cafe.

So, you know that you like to cook since you were little?

I think it is kind of under the influence, because one of our relatives has a restaurant. I did not have a concrete plan for my life, it just happened step by step.

You work very efficiently but still looks elegant, how did you make it?

I have studied Business after I moved to Berlin. This helps me a lot not only about my work in the company, but also my personal career. I know how to do my tax and to manage my own business. Working in kitchen and serving the customers let me learn to fix everything one by one without hurry. Even I am really exhausted, people still can’t feel it.

How did you choose the music here? And there is even a piano!

I have made some list for the music here, but I also let my partners to play the song they like. The principle is no Hip-Hop and no stressing music. Piano is just happened to be here. A friend said he can rent me a piano with good price, I think, ok, so we have a piano, and it did match the style of my cafe.

Then do you have any new plan? For example, you can hold some small concert here!

Yes, I’m thinking about that. To be honest, I found this place accidentally and on the next day I just signed the contract. I want to open my cafe in summer, because it is the season that people are willing to fool around the corner, or try something new. In winter, most people will go to where they already know directly. And it was already June; I must do that as soon as possible. Thanks to many friends' help, we finished the entire interior in 3 weeks and opened in July! Of course it was like chaos at the beginning, but it works and it’s getting better now. After Christmas and New Year, the busy season of catering, I will have more time to plan for the concerts.

I found this lovely cafe accidentally. The first time I was there I just took a name card and left since I have another interview in the same day. After I went home I sent her email and got the positive feedback. During the interview I can't help but ask how old she is, because she looks really young (and she is young in fact!). But she already has her own business and a cafe. I wish I could be like her someday, who is independent and has great ability as well!

Living in Berlin x interview 018: a lovely delicacies shop which supplies delicious food from Greece.

Valli comes from Greece. She is a sociologist.  She has moved to Berlin this September, but this is not her first time in Berlin. Now she has a delicacies shop, Rises, in which she sells several products made in Greece and they are all made from small scale producers.

Why did you move to Berlin?

We have two daughters and they both live in Germany now, and we have many German friends, therefore, we come here very often. When we visit friends here, they always ask us to bring some delicious Greek Mediterranean delicacies. Since my daughters are older enough now, so we thought: it’s time for us to do something different! Frankfurt am Main and Berlin were the cities that we considered to move to, but we love the tempo of life and the atmosphere in Berlin more than Frankfurt. Berlin is not that commercial, and that match my philosophy of this shop. Besides, the people are more open minded.  This is a city with lots of new opportunities.

Do you like Berlin?

當然 Of course.

Do you have any tips for Berlin?

I love arts. One must visit the museums here, and all these wonderful art exhibitions!

Rises
What’s the meaning of Rises?

Rises means root in Greek. Basically it supported to be written as Rizes, but due to the pronunciation in German, we decided to change z into s, so that it sounds much closer to the original pronunciation. And if you ask me why why I made this choice? It is because of the many meanings of the word: tradition, longevity, nature. The roots are the basis of the tree, and I like the stability and concreteness of trees.

What’s your philosophy of your shop?

Back to nature!

Does it have anything to do with the concept of health or it is more focus on the relationship between people and land?

I think of it in a holistic way. When I say “back to nature”, for me, it means back to the basics, it means to live a natural life as a human being. I don’t mean that we should live on mountains or plant everything by ourselves or not cherish the fruits of civilization, but to think about the meaning of life, what means most to us. All the products that I have here have been chosen individually. It took me almost 2 years to set up the concept for this store. Through some introductions of a friends and the magazine I got the informations of these producers. I visited every small scale producer, I talked to them and learned a lot about their products. I want my customers to know what they are eating, where the food comes from - and the stories behind the food. We should pursuit quality, not quantity. Try to eat moderately and to enjoy the real flavor.

In these years, Greece has been the epicenter of criticism. But we have a variety of landscapes -mountain and see, and our main industries are tourism and great food. I want to show people the beauty of my country. I want them to taste Greece.

And I muss tell every one of you, the Greek coffee is really delicious! I’m the one who normally does not drink coffee, but it was really nice - I drank two cups!

Hadjidakis
Apart from the food and the great coffee, we also play quality Greek music in the shop - Hadjidakis etc.

Oh! It is the music from Greece! The music was very nice and fresh, I felt, what a wonderful morning!

I made the interior design by myself. Because there are lot of products and not every customer has time to hear my introduction one by one. It was important to me to give every product their own corner as well as the information about the producer and exact origin. All this information, along with the prices, is hand-written on papers on the shelves.

I found it really lovely, instead of the feeling of reading something, I felt more like that  someone is talking to me!

I think you were really brave to do this, to put down everything you had in Greece, and to start a new life in Berlin. Aren’t you afraid?

No risk, no fun.

Is there anything else you are planning for this shop?

I am planning to serve Greek breakfast on Sundays. I want the shop to have a home-feeling atmosphere, where people can come in and really take a break. After the closing time, this place can also host small events, in which Greek food and wine will be provided. We’ve tried this a couple of times, and the feedback was really positive. Customers have told me that they felt like home. This is exactly what I want to achieve.

To be honest I was attractive by the interior and the logo of the shop, that was the reason I went inside. When I was looking around, I kept wondering, how could I never notice this shop before? Then I talked with Valli, and she told me it's just opened, no wonder I won't know this place before. During the interview, we changed a lot of opinions, and she was so energetic and very hospitable to answer my question and explain the Greece food. Besides, she let me try many food as well. Of course I was asked, why are you here?

I think, the most important thing for both of us is the thought to do some change. Yes, we should always be brave to do some change.
